New owner of (I think) 1975 Reedcraft

Hi,

We've just picked up this Reedcraft Sea Hawk - quite cheap with a nearly new Honda 4 stroke.

It's been used as a small motorboat for last few years but we'd like to get it saying again.

There's some fraying on the cable if the furling jib and it's generally a bit scruffy (just needs some elbow grease).

Any pointers on renewing the sheets and pulley and block arrangements?

Welcome to the forum. I hope you don't mind but I've edited the subject line of your Introduction so it fits the pattern for the Introductions area. That has also allowed me to add you to the alphabetical list of Members. As a member you can now post in (almost) every area of the forum.

That should give you an idea of what was fitted and how it should be used. Here's an image of my SeaHawk (sold in 2018) that puts it into practice.

What I don't have is any record of the gauges of the sheets.

I don't think a furling jib was ever offered by Reedcraft and suspect that may have been retro fitted by a previous owner. I don't have any experience of them. Hopefully other owners may be able to identify the supplier and offer some help.

Are you on the Broads?  If so, you’ll find adding a tabernacle will make it much easier to lower the mast.  We have a furling system for the jib but it doesn’t have a pole which probably, I suspect, makes mast lowering more difficult.

I was wondering about venue too. I'm not too familiar with the Southern Broads rivers, but my best guess was somewhere in the North Norfolk coast between Morston and Brancaster rather than the Broads.

As for the technical issues. Can I request that they are posted in the Help Desk area. They'll be easier for others to find in the future.

We're in Cley next the Sea (near Blakeney).  It'll be used mostly for coastal cruising - no bridges and no need for a tabernacle (at the moment!)

Thanks for that.  My guess is also it was a retro fit.  It's from Holt Allen.  Operation seems pretty straightforward - I have a Jib and Genoa, although I've not tried to rig either yet.

The sail number (206) has helped date it a bit, as has the badge on the original and replacement sails (I have both sets).  The original set (all there but tatty) has the Jeckells tear drop label from 1970, the sail bag has an older looking style but same slogan.  So pre 1976. (Pictured)



The replacement set has a 1989-1994 logo.

On the subject of rigging I had a good read of the set you posted - I can't visualise the end of the boom set and how it's routed to the cleats.  I'm not what I have is correct.  Also, I'm missing the kicking strap.

This is what I have at the moment.
